Minister for M R K Paneerselvam opened a special centre at Sankara Nethralaya for patients covered under the Kalaignar Health Insurance scheme. The Minister said that awareness about the scheme has gone up to the extent that about 900 beneficiaries undergo surgery every day.

The special centre of Sankara Nethralaya on Greams Road would do initial screening before referring the beneficiaries to the main hospital for treatment. Sankara Nethralaya has launched, �Eye Care Express,` a mobile medical unit that conducts free screening at government offices as a part of the World Health Day campaign. V. Vaidyanathan, Chairman of the Hospital, S.S. Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, and S. Surendran, head, Surgical Gastroenterology, Government Stanley Hospital, spoke.
