What is the procedure to get ‘Vehicle Permit’?

The application forms for getting the vehicle permit are available in the regional transport offices. Get this application, fill it up, and attach proof of residence, proof of vehicle fitness, and proof of vehicle registration. If all these are properly furnished, vehicle permit may be given within a day.

You can apply for vehicle permit even without owning a vehicle. ‘Process order’ will be given. This order will be valid for 3 months and will expire automatically. Within this 3 months’ period, the applicant will have to furnish all the proofs mentioned above in order to get a permanent vehicle permit.

What is temporary permit?

In order to drive anywhere across the country, you will have to get a ‘national permit’. If the permit is for any particular state, driving will be permitted only in that state. If these vehicles which have permits to operate in one particular state enter other states, a temporary permit will be given by the concerned regional transport office.

What is to be done if temporary permit to enter other states is not available?

No problems. You can obtain a temporary permit in the vehicle check post at the border od the state.

What are the charges for this temporary permit?

For entering other states, it is Rs. 150/-. This fess varies from state to state. Hence, you can pay 10% of the applicable vehicle tax in that state and get a temporary permit.

These temporary permits are issued with validity for 7 days, 1 month, 1 month, and 3 months. If you extend your stay beyond 7 days, you have to pay the fees applicable for 1 month. Again, if you have a 1-month temporary permit and exceed your stay, you need to pay the temporary license fees for 3 months.
