Plan for Corporation Residential Schools – Hoists Safety Alarm

The proposal of the Chennai Corporation Residential Schools for nearby vicinity slum students has lifted up a debate on whether accommodating students will give a solution for rising quit rate and also child work.

After conducting meeting with parents of the Class 11 and 12 students, the corporation has determined to open up the residential facility in 4 out of the 32 higher secondary schools in Chennai. Subsequently, the hostels will be facilitated at Corporation schools at, Pulla Avenue in Shenoy Nagar, Subbarayan Street in Chetpet, and at two schools in Saidapet.

Based on the successful academic results, the above schools have been selected for residential facility, says a corporation official.

Whilst the thought is to offer students a favorable surrounding for academic fineness, the corporation has to bring in a clear plan for the students safety.

Corporation officials need to focus more to protect the students against malpractices, said Vidhyasagar Ramamurthy, UNICEF child protection officer. He also insisted that, the students should have high safety norms and a joint monitoring approach by the government and NGOs.

All divisions of the civic body will constitute a group to supervise safety and carry out health checks regularly. 

Parents who are keen to allow their children to residential schools, mostly of single mothers who faces struggle in balancing work and home; and mothers who have more than three children, said the Education department officials.
