Rollback on Suburban fares

Posted on: 25/Jun/2014 11:32:00 AM
Spelling noteworthy relief for daily commuters in Chennai and other metros, the Narendra Modi governments on Tuesday rolled back the suburban train fare hike ranging from 60-150%, and announced a flat hike of 14.2% on second class monthly season tickets.

This means that a majority of Chennai`s 10 lakh-odd suburban commuters will not have to spend more, but some 80,000 people who buy season tickets will have to pay more, though not double as feared earlier. There will be no increase in second class suburban ordinary fares up to 80 km, said a railways circular. The other revised fares would be effective from Saturday.

The railways had, on June 20, announced a sharp cut in subsidy with monthly season ticket fares on suburban travel being charged on the basis of 30 single journeys instead of around 15 single journeys.

However, the increase of 14.2% in passenger fares for long-distance travel and 6.5% in freight services remain unchanged, and would be effective from Tuesday night.
