Scorching heat continues to torment Chennai residents

Throughout Tamil Nadu including Chennai, the summer heat has been relentlessly high and continues to persist in all major cities.
It is interesting to note that the highest temperature of 43 Degrees Celsius recorded in Chennai during 1948 is matched by the current heat trend. The heat in Northern districts is particularly oppressive.
The highest temperature recorded in Chennai is 43.3 Degrees Celsius in 1948. The next highest is 42.4 Degrees Celsius during 2012, and the 39.7 Degrees Celsius in 2013.
However, the trend this year is touching the high points. Last month, it was 41 Degrees Celsius. The heat has been persistently increasing every day. Hence, it is 3 expected that the record of 1948 will be broken in this year!
The heat has been high even in other cities like Nellai, Madurai, Trichy, and Vellore. The temperature has been hovering around 40 Degree Celsius over the last few days. This is far higher than the average heat experienced as per the records. In Chennai, there has been an increase of temperature by 4 Degrees Celsius as compared to the average.
El Nino phenomenon the main reason?
This trend of high temperatures and low rainfalls is attributed to the heat current in Pacific Ocean known as the El Nino phenomenon.
Meteorologist, Mr. Vijayakumar explained:
El Nino has been creating a lot of changes. The current high heat trend in Tamil Nadu is due to this. It is worth noting that temperatures in Delhi have also been quite higher even as compared with Chennai & Tamil Nadu.
In the existing environment, the atmospheric air-heat expands the air and absorbs all the moisture. Thus, there is a further rise in the temperature. Extended day times are also responsible for the trend of high heat.
