Vegetables price goes high in Chennai

Posted on: 07/Jul/2014 12:01:48 PM
Now the price of coriander is Rs 25 a bunch in Chennai.

A week after prices of indispensable vegetables nearly doubled, there appears to be little relief on the horizon - as prices stayed put, or went marginally higher, regardless of which shop in which part of the city you buy veggies at.

Paradoxically, in most areas, the prices in supermarkets and retail chains such as Pazhamudir Cholai and Reliance Fresh remained slightly cheaper than vendors on the street. Tomatoes were being sold in a Pazhamudir outlet for Rs 32 per kg, while vendors at the busy Mylapore market were selling Rs 40 a kilo. With the cost of the poriyal staples like cabbage, carrot, capsicum and beetroot increasing gradually since March, it is the sudden spike in essential veggies that has hit the average middle-class budget.

Tomatoes have been bullish in this regard - prices for the red, squishy perennially necessary vegetable have gone from Rs 22 last month to a mind-blowing Rs 45 this Sunday. Almost the same renounce exists for onions: prices going from a nominal Rs 16 per kg last month to a whopping Rs 49 this weekend.
