Sky-high prices of vegetables - Tomato sold at Rs. 66/- per kg & beans at Rs. 100/-!

Vegetables are transported to Koyambedu wholesale market from other states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and from other places in Tamil Nadu state.
500 trucks carrying vegetables arrive daily.
However, the number of trucks has reduced to 300/350 because of rains and other reasons.
This resulted in a steep price rise of the vegetables. Especially, tomato was sold at Rs. 70/- per kg and coriander at Rs. 60/- per bundle. The prices of green peas & ginger also went up steeply.
House makers have all been terribly upset at the sky-high prices of vegetables. They had to avoid buying costly vegetables. Some hotels stopped giving tomato & coriander chutneys.
Currently, there is an increase in the quantity of vegetables reaching Koyambedu. The usual strength of 500 tricks has resumed. There is an indication of fall in the vegetable prices.
Wholesale prices of vegetable per kg at Koyambedu market after the reduction:
Brinjal – Rs. 15/-, to Rs. 10/-, Carrot - Rs. 15/- to Rs. 10/-, beetroot – Rs. 35/- to Rs. 28/-, turnip – Rs. 26/- to Rs. 20/-, Drumstick – Rs. 30/- to Rs. 20/-, flat beans – Rs. 40/- to Rs. 30/-, cauliflower – Rs. 20/- to Rs. 15/-, yam – Rs. 25/- to Rs. 22/-, potato – Rs. 28/- to Rs. 25/-, beans – Rs. 60/- to Rs. 40/-.
However, the price of onion has increased from Rs. 26/- per kg to Rs. 30/-, tomato, Rs. 50/- per kg to Rs. 55/-. The price of coriander per bundle has been come to Rs. 7/-, bottle gourd by Rs. 10/- per kg, snake gourd at Rs. 12/- per kg, cabbage at Rs. 10/- per kg, radish at Rs. 15/- per kg, chowchow at Rs. 35/- per kg, small yam at Rs. 25/- per kg, and small onions at Rs. 25/- per kg.
It is noted that the retail prices of vegetable remain high as compared to the wholesale prices.
This has upset the middle income & lower income groups of families.
