Chennai is said to have a huge contribution in Sydney’s metro rails!

In another two years, trains will be exported to Australia from our very own Chennai. The Alstom manufacturing unit present at Sri City near Tada on Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border will construct 22 new trains containing six coaches each. These trains are meant to be of use in an upcoming metro project in Sydney. Plans are on to commence exporting by the end of 2016.

A team of Australian officials made a visit to the manufacturing unit and found it satisfactory with all necessary facilities. Further, they decided to go ahead with manufacturing trains here. As we all are aware, it is this same unit where metro rails for Chennai are getting ready.

Speaking to Bharat Salhotra, the managing director of Alstom India, he says officials from Australia were quenched with the manufacturing facilities and engineers we have here. The overall project estimation for the Sydney metro rail is 280 million Euros. Specifications for the coaches will be given out by the company itself.

The manufacturing unit in Chennai was set up to meet the needs for Chennai metro rail, he added.
