Opposition for privatizing railway processes

Posted on: 09/Oct/2014 6:11:18 PM
Trade unions have opposed government’s decision to privatize railway ticketing.

The Railway department had plans to privatize various functions of the department including infrastructure. The decision was also mentioned in the railway budget which got issued recently. As a step, cleanup works in few railway stations are already handed over to private companies. Similarly, others like gate keepers in unmanned level crossing, and other functions were also set to be outsourced to private agents.

Following this, the department is also eyeing on outsourcing railway ticketing procedures. The railway department is currently engaged in all these works; however the e-ticketing is already being handled by private agents.

Amidst this, large queues are found in all ticket counters of railway stations. This leaves people waiting for more time. Officials at the railway department believe to bring down the waiting time by increasing the total number of ticket counters. The necessary facilities for setting up these additional counters will be taken care of by the railway department itself. This move by the railway department has now received huge opposition from trade unions as there are several complaints about the railway services carried out by private agents.
