One Easwari, 27 year old pregnant woman from Sriperumbudur, who was in her family way, complained of severe numbness of legs and pain in her spine Sensing the complexity of the problem she was finally referred to Government Hospital, Chennai on August 25 by the Sriperumbudur General Hospital, as she complained of complete loss of control over her bladder and bowels. She was diagnosed a clot in the spine. She was referred to neurosurgeon Dr Arun Kumar on August 31.

The doctors networked with two other government hospitals -- Women and Children hospital in Egmore and Institute of Child health after deciding to operate and after obtaining consent from the family members to do the complex twin surgery.

The same day, gynecologists from the Women and Children hospital in Egmore came to the hospital with their team for an emergency cesarean. After the caesarean the woman was turned to the sides and performed the spine surgery called laminectomy. A portion of the vertebral bone called the lamina was removed to remove the 3cm clot below the spine. The baby delivered by caesarian, weighing 1.8 kg, was shifted to the incubator in the Institute of Child Health in Egmore.

The twin surgery with Dr Arunkumar leading team of surgeons and physician s, performed was successful and the child was returned the mother

. “She was in her 32nd week of pregnancy and after ultrasound and MRI scans, we decided to go ahead with both operations at the same time,” Dr. Veni said. The surgeries lasted for two hours. Neither caesareans nor spine surgeries is rare, but the combination is," said hospital medical superintendent Dr C Veni. "We are happy that our hospital has been able to save the baby and help the mother."

Congratulations to the team of doctors who performed the rare surgery. It’s also a message that Government Hospitals are definitely better than most of the corporatized hospital.
