Recently Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu gave approval for extending Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase I project to Wimco Nagar at Tiruvottiyur.
The initial proposal was to have seven stations on the nine-kilometre stretch between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar in Tiruvotiyur. Now, Metro Rail is planning to add an eighth station. This station will come after Washermenpet in the underground stretch. Initially, the 2.2-km underground stretch was to have only the Korukkupettai station.
Chennai Metro Rail has appointed a consultant who will provide design of the stations, viaduct besides any other such changes on the newly-added stretch.
But the real challenge before Metro Rail would be to acquire land on the stretch. With land acquisition now becoming a tough process with the new Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, it is to be seen what amendment is being brought about by the Union Urban Development Ministry.
