Construction of metro rail between Chinnamalai airport and St. Thomas Mount is almost done. The test run will be made by the month of November this year. Following this, metro rail service between these two areas will be kick-started in December, say sources.
Aiming to reduce increasing traffic in Chennai city, a Rs 20 crore metro rail project is being carried out in two routes crossing a stretch of 45 km. The first phase of the service includes metro rail from Vannarapettai to ways through High court, Anna Salai, Saidapet, finally reaching Chennai airport crossing a stretch of 23.1 km distance. The second phase includes service from Chennai central railway station to Anna Nagar, Thirumangalam, Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Alandur, finally reaching St. Thomas mount, covering a stretch of 22 km. Necessary construction works were started in 2009.
When asked about the progress of these works, one of the officials at the Chennai metro rail department says works for Chennai Koyambedu to Alandur of the 2nd phase is completely done. Inspectors will arrive on 20th this month and carry out the final stage inspection for 4 days. Following this, the next step will be taken to make available the service between Chinnamalai Airport and St.Thomas Mount.
