Chennai Metro: Koyambedu-Alandur section: 1 train every 5 minutes to be run!

Chennai Metro Rail Project is executed in 2 routes for a total of 45 km.

The first route between Washermanpet & Airport is being constructed at 2 levels. The section between Washermanpet & Saidapet covering 14.3 km will be underground  and the balance 8.7 km will be on an elevated corridor between Saidapet & Airport.

The second route covering 22 km is between Central and Alandur via St. Thomas Mount. The section between Periyar EVR Road & Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue will be underground. The balance will be on elevated corridor.

19 Railway stations are located underground. 13 Railway stations are located on the elevated corridor.

With the work in the section between Koyambedu & Alandur complete, arrangements are being made to start public service for this 10 km distance.

Daily test-runs are being carried out. All the 21 trains available are being used in the test runs.

Security Commissioner has to certify the tracks and operations after inspection to commence public service. Chennai Metro authorities have submitted all the documentation required to receive this certificate.

Security Commissioner is scrutinizing the report and will visit Chennai for a week in a day or two to conduct thorough inspection by checking the operations. If he is satisfied, certificate will be issued. Public operation is expected to commence from April.

Minor pending tasks in the Koyambedu-Alandur section are getting completed in 1 or 2 days.

Once the certificate is received from the Security Commissioner, it is planned to run 1 train every 5 minutes in this section.
