Soon private vehicle owners will have to burn some money from their pockets to enter highly congested city areas. The charge for ‘congestion zones’ in the city will be fixed by the government.

After about two years of giving approval for a study made on heavy city traffic, as a move to solve the issue, congestion tax are to be soon imposed by the government. In a recently held meet, engineers of the corporation, NGO members and members from other planning agencies were present and discussion were on to emulate the London model of congestion tax so as to tackle increasing traffic jam.

With the implementation of this new method, congested places like T.Nagar, George Town, Nungambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Adyar are expected to get reduced, say officials. Before finalizing on the congestion tax charges, traffic police and members of NGO will study the total passenger count in these areas.

Congestion tax exemption will be applicable for vehicles including auto rickshaws, taxis, ambulances, motorcycles, and buses. However, private cars will be bound to pay this tax on a daily basis.

Earlier, in the year 2013, few other methods of traffic control like bicycle sharing system, bus rapid transit system and inter-modal integration were incorporated, inspired by the models in cities in UK, Singapore and China.
