Metro rail service awaits nod from central government

The central government is requested to provide full and final approval for commencing metro rail service between Chennai Koyambedu and Alandur. Officials at the metro rail department say the permission is likely to be received by the end of this month.
With the cooperation of central and state governments and Japanese organization, necessary works for kick-starting metro rail services in two routes in Chennai are on the go. The first route is between Chennai Vannarapettai and Airport covering a stretch of 23.05 km and the second route is between Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount covering a distance of 22.5 km.
Over 19 trains will run in subways and 13 trains aboveground. On the whole 32 metro rails are to be functioned. As the first phase of the service, metro rail between Alandur and Koyambedu encompassing 10 km distance is being carried out. The metro rail department has also decided to inspect the stretch between Vannarapettai and Wimco Nagar for setting up metro train services here.
Speaking about this, metro rail officials say works for metro rail services between Chennai Koyambedu and Alandur is done and protection commissioner Sathish Kumar Mittal inspected the stretch. Following this, he gave permission to make available the metro rail service between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar. Following this, services between Ashok Nagar and Alandur are to be provided for which we have placed plea to the central government, he added.
