Metro Rail gets clearance for operations

The Ministry of Urban Development has cleared the metro rail operations on a single line. However, the clearance is conditional: from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar, the trains can operate on two tracks (up and down) but beyond that point, both services will be on a single track up to Alandur. The Union Ministry of Urban Development communicated this to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) authorities on Tuesday.

The stage is set for inauguration of the 10-km Chennai metro rail between Koyambedu and Alandur. Last month, the Commissioner for Metro Railway Safety SK Mittal completed the second part of his inspection of stations tracks and equipment. He inspected Koyambedu, CMBT, Arumbakkam, Vadapalani and Ashok Nagar stations and that of viaducts, electrical works, inspected escalators, lifts, station control room and registers maintained.

As of now trains on Koyambedu and Alandur section will run on single track due to an unfinished crossover at Alandur, making it a wait of 20 minutes for commuters
