The plan for Chennais multi-level parking facility was made as long as 7 years ago! Finally, this multi-level vehicle parking facility is ready at  Wallace Garden off Greams Road. It will be open for motorists by July.

Features:
Chennai Corporation has been running trials on the seven-storey structure. It can accommodate 330 cars and 200 two-wheelers. The facility works on a German technology based on a shuttle-and-trolley system. The building is fully computerised and fitted with CCTV cameras.

Procedure:
The commuters have to collect a token at the entrance, drive up to an elevator. There are two elevators for bikes and four for cars. Swipe the token, and leave the vehicle there. The system registers the vehicle number, and the machine generates a parking space. Except for ticketing, everything else is machine-operated.

Vehicle movement arrangement:
A system of pallets and lifts moves the car from the elevator to the parking space and follows the same method to retrieve them. A board displays the registration numbers of the vehicles descending towards the driver. There is minimal human interface.

Charges:
Four-wheelers would be charged Rs. 20 for the first hour and Rs.10 for every additional hour. For two-wheelers, the fee will be Rs. 5 per hour. Car owners can get a monthly pass for `1,500, while bikers can get one for Rs. 500.

Levels:
Two-wheelers would be parked on the ground floor and the terrace while cars will occupy the other floors. Cars and bikes have only a single entry and exit to the building which is likely to make people wait during peak hours, as it is a narrow stretch.

Location:
The facility is located opposite Apollo Hospitals and will largely help staff and patients coming to the hospital. It will also ease the encroachment and congestion on this road.

Feedback:
Being in the initial stages of operation, some customers felt time taken was a bit long. However, they found it useful.  They would prefer the 2-wheeler parking on the frontal area as it would reduce time.

Designers & Builders:
A private consortium formed by Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited and Marg Axis developed the facility at `35 crore on 29,878 sq ft land. This project faced some legal wrangles from some residents which got cleared in a short duration.
