While people have placed their plea to bring down the fares of metro rail in Chennai stating it to be exorbitant, the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has plans to quote double the prevailing fare for special class rake.
While the regular class will be priced between Rs 10 and Rs 40, the special class coaches will be priced between Rs 20 and Rs 80.
However, the differentiation in class is nothing much; the special class coaches will have cushioned seats. According to CMRL officials, as the ridership picks up, one rake on every train will have the special coach. There are few people who do not want to travel in regular coaches when it is overcrowded.
On asking these authorities about how they will identify whether the commuter has got a ticket for special coach or regular one, they say frequent checks will be carried out. Inspection staff will have ticket readers that can read the validity and balance of the card, they add. The metro rail service that was launched on Monday this week between Alandur and Koyambedu and so far no clear clue is found about the use of special class rakes by people. Nearly one lakh commuters have used the metro since its launch.
