Metro rail service is provided between Alandur and Chennai Central at a price of Rs 40. Before the launch of the service, it was largely expected and public were eagerly waiting. Crowd of people were expected to throng in to the trains after the launch. However, owing to high price of train ticket, metro rail service was not preferred by many people.
Most of the crowd that currently use the service is from software professionals who board the train at Alandur, Guindy, Ekkattuthangal, etc. This cozy travel is preferred by such IT professionals and not common men. Common men are to pay at least Rs 80 for a travel in the metro. This has made metro a tourist spot for people of poor background.
When travelled in bus, just an amount of Rs 15 is to be spent for traveling from St. Thomas mount, Adambakam and surrounding areas. People from other states who visit Chennai are skeptical about choosing the metro rail service. When they come as a family of 5 or 6, they will have to spend about Rs 240 for a travel in the metro, whereas it will be Rs 100 in bus for the same distance travel.
People along with their kids visit the metro just like visiting park or beach just for time pass. They take photos inside the train and enjoy the journey. Metro rail is mostly found empty during the weekdays and receives considerable crowd during weekends.
Hence, officials have decided to popularize the metro rail service among the people and attract more commuters. As a move for the same, the metro rail officials have made arrangements for the school students to be brought to the train. Rotary club and other organizations will bring these children to the train and bear the cost. About 300 students will be brought to the train on 29th of this month.
