Posted on: 24/Aug/2015 11:11:33 AM
Prices of flowers and vegetables in the Koyambedu wholesale market, considered one of the largest in southern states, have zoomed following steep demand on account of coming Onam festival.

As Onam festival nears and the wedding season begins, vegetables will be dearer to the daily buyer.

Price of onions brought from Maharashtra has gone up by about Rs 15 per kilogram and is likely to drop only after a month when the second lot of the crop comes to the market. The only consolation is that the locally cultivated sambar onion prices have remained stable as the supply is steady. A kilogram of sambar onions sells at Rs 40 per kilogram in the wholesale market, while the retail price is Rs 50. Bangalore tomatoes which sold at Rs 7 a week ago are now being sold at Rs 15, while the country tomato is priced at Rs 10. Potatoes that are sold at Rs 15 per kilogram can be sourced from Koyambedu for Rs 12 per kilogram.

Prices of flowers per kg: Mullai (Rs 300), Kanakamparam (Rs 500), tube rose (sampanki) (Rs. 350), jaathi (Rs. 120), button rose (Rs.100) and rose varieties (Rs 60).

Flower prices are expected to increase by 30 to 40 per cent in the days to come. The price of jasmine may touch Rs. 1,000 per kg while Kanakamparam is expected to cross Rs. 1,100.

Traders say this trend would continue till Vinayagar Chaturthi next month.
