Microsoft to launch underwater datacenters

Posted on: 04/Feb/2016 10:27:29 AM
Revealing its new move in this technology-dependent world, Microsoft said that it is devising plans to set up datacenters under water.

Researchers tested Project Natick which is a prototype vessel. It was tested for about four months in 2015 on the ocean floor at nearly one kilometer distance off the US pacific coast.

The vessel got its name after Leona Philpot which is a popular character in Xbox video game franchise Halo.

Norm Whitaker, the leader of Microsoft Research NExT has posted on the official company website that the this will be functional on one day or the other. This wild adventure eventually turned out to be a regular day job at office.

The diver use to check the vessel once in a month, or there will be remote contact with it from the team.

Guaranteed outcomes

According to Microsoft, experiments are being analyzed; however initial results seem very promising. Whitaker said this is a speculative technology, i.e. if this turns to be a success, it will certainly give out instant changes to the business in terms of economics.

The mission of Natick is to create and make an underwater datacenter functional. While nearly half of the world population lives alongside waterbodies, a huge sum of money can be saved by making a slew in accessing software hosted in the internet cloud.

Power generation required for the operation of these datacenters can be sourced from currents or tides. The cold depths of the ocean will be of help for natural cooling. Whitaker also added that ease in cooling and availability of power sources and controlled environment are beneficial aspects of this system.

Plans for the next phase of the project is planned too. This is about the inclusion of larger vessel that has 30 times higher computing power as compared to the original present at headquarters of Microsoft, Redmond, Washington.

There were reports by Microsoft that state their earnings surpassed that of Wall Street which is a true evidence of winning shift

Microsoft last week reported earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations with a winning shift into the Internet cloud. During the last three months of 2015, Microsoft saw $5 billion of its total $23.8 billion profit.

Cloud computing allows people have access to the web for processing or data storage at the humongous data centers.

Most businesses make use of Microsoft Cloud as their digital platform so as to transform their business schedules, say Satya Nadella, the Chief Executive, during an earnings call.
