Posted on: 04/Feb/2016 11:58:03 AM
World Cancer Day on Thursday (February 4) is celebrated today throughout the world. Celebrating World Cancer Day today, we need to spread awareness about the preventive measures one can take from the very beginning, in order to keep the life-threatening disease at bay.

A research body said that cancer is the second biggest killer after heart disease in India, with 3.5 lakh people succumbing to the disease every year.

Symptoms of cancer everybody should know about

We are all aware that smoking tobacco, exposure to radiation and other genetic and environmental factors can cause cancer. But most of these factors are beyond our control, and we can do very little to prevent cancer. In such a situation early diagnosis can stop cancer from aggravating and spreading. And the key to early diagnosis is knowing about its signs and symptoms.

Irregular bowel movements - Irregular bowel movements like alternating constipation and diarrhoea for a prolonged time could be a sign of intestinal cancer and colorectal cancer. Apart from these, blood in urine and stools could be a sign of gastrointestinal cancer or cancer of the kidney.

Bloating - Flatulence or bloating is a common symptom in different types of cancers such as ovarian, intestinal and colorectal cancer.

Abdominal pain - Abdominal cramps or pain is a common symptom of stomach, colorectal and ovarian cancer. A hard lump also forms in the abdomen which can be felt when the stomach is pressed.

Irregular periods - Unbearable menstrual cramps, irregular periods, prolonged bleeding could be signs of uterine or ovarian cancer.

Difficulty in eating/swallowing - This is a rare symptom which is usually observed in the end stages of cancers of the stomach and throat.

Fatigue - Feeling tired is a part and parcel of cancer because many times you find it difficult to eat, and are unable to meet your body`s nutritional requirement which leads to fatigue.

Nausea and vomiting - It is a typical sign of stomach cancer because if there`s a tumour, it might block the passage of food which can trigger a gag reflex, making you nauseated.
