The release of the film Irudhi Suttru has seen a rise in the demand for boxing classes in the city. Say coaches, (We are) surprised by the increasing numbers since the movie`s release. A little girl who is only in Class 3 and who watched the film came for her first class on Monday. Her parents have called me to say she`s pumping her fists and air boxing to practice even just before she sleeps.

Many coaches take classes in open air and outdoor spaces like YMCA in Nandana and the Marina beach. Many cannot afford to rent fitness studios. One such coach holds his classes near the Loco Works bridge in Perambur. He says, I`ve been teaching for over 20 years, and usually new students come in very slowly because this isn`t a sport that is as sought-after as cricket. Suddenly after seeing the movie, six school kids have joined in the same week.

Parents are also more open to letting their daughters join boxing classes. Says one person, My sister who is eight has been bugging my parents for three years to let her learn boxing, because she sees me do it. After watching Irudhi Suttru, they finally said yes.
