3-year low in price of veggies

Posted on: 19/Feb/2016 2:20:49 PM
Surprising and bringing a heave of sigh to customers, prices of veggies have fallen to a three-year low with most of them seen a 70 percent dip in price due to various reasons. Of all the reasons, farmers say the main reason is the increased yield of vegetable between December and February compared to earlier years. A kg of onion is priced Rs 15, tomato for Rs 10, beans for Rs 15, potato for Rs 15 and ladies finger for Rs 15.

One of the farmers who cultivate onions in a land of four acres in Anaipatti village of Dingudal district says they were blessed with the unprecedented rainfall which has led to the increase in yield of onion to 3 quintals (a quintal is 100 kg) as compared to one acre which was normal yield. He adds that they have not seen such bumper produce in the past 3 or 4 years. Onion loads have been received from Nashik and parts of Tamil Nadu at price of Rs 35 and Rs 40 per kg for the past two years.

According to traders, onions and tomatoes received at the Koyambedu market has been a factor of concern as they are now cornered to sell at cheap rates. There is a significant drop in number of people arriving at the market. Regular buyers are not also seen in the recent days. The scenario is likely to change by mid of March, says a potato trader and member of Market Management Committee.

About 180 to 200 lorries from Theni, Madurai, Erode, Andhra and Karnataka are being received in the past one month. This has been 120 to 150 for the past three years. To note, there are about 2000 vegetable stores in Koyambedu vegetable market.
