B.Ed becomes a two-year course

There are 699 teacher education colleges in the state, imparting B.Ed and M.Ed courses, with a total of 65,000 B.Ed seats. This year, 15 new colleges have come up in Tamil Nadu with 1,500 B.Ed seats.The university vice-chancellor says that with B.Ed becoming a two-year course, colleges need to appoint eight more faculty for the second year and put in additional infrastructure by October to accommodate more students.
The state higher education department has decided that the B.Ed programme would be of two years duration from this academic year as per the regulation laid down by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
