Machine wins against Man in Go match

Posted on: 11/Mar/2016 10:00:33 AM
World Go Champion Lee Se-dol lost against the Google DeepMind`s AlphaGo program in Seoul. The first match was played on Wednesday, and there are four more matches scheduled in the best of five series. If Lee wins the series, he will receive $1 million. Google will donate the prize money to charity if the computer wins.

Speaking about this, the man who has been called the Roger Federer of Go, said, I heard Google DeepMind`s [artificial intelligence] is surprisingly strong and getting stronger, but I am confident that I can win.

Go is a traditional Chinese game. This two player game consist of placing black and white stones on a square grid of 19 by 19 lines. The person who takes territorial control of the board by using pieces to surround the opponent wins. The game requires strategy, intuition and mental stamina, and can last for several hours.

Says a senior official of Google DeepMind, Teaching computers to master Go has been kind of a holy grail for artificial intelligence scientists. There are more possible configurations of the board than there are atoms in the universe. Go is the most profound game that mankind has ever devised. Go is a game primarily about intuition and feel rather than brute calculation, which is what makes it so hard for computers to play well.
