Apollo instigates awareness on the “Golden Hours in Stroke”

Apollo institute of Neurosciences and Rotary Club of Madras Midtown and Madras Downtown jointly organized an awareness session, on "Golden Hours in Stroke" by Dr. Lakshmi Narasimhan Sr.Consultant Neurologist, at boat club Chennai.

This session was focused to create awareness on neurological disorders and available treatments. As Neurosciences is becoming one of the most important clinical areas for hospitals and health systems to manage.

Dr. Lakshmi Narasimhan Senior Consultant Neurologist, Apollo Hospitals addressed the gathering on emerging trends in treatments for neurological disorders and on a variety of neuroscience related topics such as program development, physician integration, outcomes measurement, and reimbursement. 

He also explained that patients who show symptoms of stroke needs to be rushed to the hospital within the 3 golden hours to uundergo numerous tests, even before the actual treatment including a brain scan to ensure the stroke’s cause is a blocked artery and not a bleeding blood vessel.

Dr.Lakshmi Narasimhan said that educating public on the neurological disorders and the available treatments is the foremost action to be taken. For every minute in which blood flow is not restored, nearly two million additional nerve cells die.

Stroke also called the “Brain Attack" is the commonest devastating disease of the brain. It is the leading cause of adult disability and second cause of death worldwide. It affects most people before 60 yrs of age in Indian population, when compared with western data. 

Warning Signs of Stroke (Symptoms)
 
Stroke symptoms may have different manifestations
#Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg or all, especially on one side of the body 
#Sudden development of disturbance in speaking or of comprehension. 
#Sudden change of mood, personality or behavior sudden loss of vision on one side. 
#Sudden vertigo, double vision, dizziness, lack of balance or coordination on walking 
#Sudden unexplained headache, vomiting and impairment of consciousness.
