New car technology may avoid road mishaps

Researchers are now testing a simpler car communication technology that can reduce the propensity of road accidents. Car to Car communications involves broadcasting of speeds, bearing and transmitting other data between cars over a distance of 100 metres.

According to a report from MIT, the new technology can alert computers that are on board the car, as well as the car’s safety systems. This will, they hope, avoid road mishaps. The first commercial testing is all set to take place on the roads of Sunnyvale, California.

Currently, most modern cars have radars and proximity sensors. These alert the drivers about impending hazards. However, the scope of these devices is limited, in that, they cannot alert drivers to things such as blind curves or an impending T bone collision. The sensors also cannot identify sudden brakes.

Car to Car communications hopes to avoid these scenarios.
