Physical passports may soon be a thing of the past

De La Rue, the world`s largest producer of passports and printer of British bank notes, has announced plans to embed passports directly on to smartphones. This may mean that the smartphone may replace a physical passport at immigration control.
A senior executive of the company said, (We have) started work on a project to provide secure phone-based information that would work at immigration control.
Much of the paperwork needed for flight travel has become digital. Passports are one of the last hold outs. De La Rue hopes to adapt its identity technology into a digital format and for governments to approve its use. Mobile based clearance systems have already been tested in airports in Miami and Atlanta, where travellers can use a phone to enter customs information. However, the executive said, paperless passports were still in the early stage of development and were unlikely to arrive in the short term.
