Fire Department officials have mentioned to reduce the usage of air-conditioner in order to prevent fire while travelling in a car. It has also been advised not to use AC when not required.

Last 22nd, eight passengers including five women and one child were en route to Senji in Villupuram District from KK Nagar. Around 3 PM, the car caught fire due to the severe heat wave conditions in the city at Kathipara flyover. All six passengers escaped unhurt. Fire engines rushed to the accident site and the fire was put out after almost half an hour. Similarly in another incident on 23rd a car caught fire while it was speeding on the flyover near Kasi theatre. During the last 2 months, 50 cars caught fire.

When asked an official of the fire department, he said, There is excessive heat because of the scorching sun. Since the AC is running in the cars the compressor gets hot. The heat from the car engine and compressor heat causes fire. People who travel by car should reduce the usage of AC. It has been suggested that people should give their vehicle engines a rest at regular intervals. Due to overheat the car tyres burst. Hence only nitrogen air should be used to fill the tyres.  Now and then the car should be serviced. Only in five years the cars should be sent for maintenance. If this is followed, cars will not catch fire.
