New single emergency number 112

In India, different emergency communication and response systems are in place. The Central Government has mentioned that all existing emergency numbers will be phased out within a year of rolling out 112, depending upon the awareness about this new facility. Other foreign countries including America use 911 as emergency number. The calls will be connected to the concerned department, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has approved the provision of a single number for various emergency services that would be similar to the 911 all-in-one emergency service in the US.
If a consumer calls 112 he will be connected to the concerned department. This will come into effect from 1st January 2017.
