Opera brings out power saving mode for more battery life

Posted on: 16/May/2016 9:18:13 AM
Opera has added a feature that will benefit the battery life of laptops. The web browser expert has added a power saving mode to its developer channel. This would help desktop users of the software increase battery life by up to 50 percent. Incidentally, this is over Google’s Chrome web browser.

The tweaks that have been incorporated include reducing background activity when tabs are minimised, bringing down CPU wake times, pausing unused plug-ins and reducing the famerate to 30fps. The software also uses hardware acceleration for all video playback and disabling browser theme animations.

According to Opera, the system was tested on Lenovo X250 and Dell XPS 13 ultrabooks. These ran on Windows 10. The battery lasted about 3 hours with the power saving mode on, while it ran on high performance power mode. Without the power saving mode, the battery lasted about 2 hours - the same as when using Google’s Chrome browser.
