Thanjavur polling postponed to May 23

Posted on: 16/May/2016 10:13:35 AM
The Election Commission has postponed the voting of Thanjavur constituency to May 23. The decision was made late Sunday night, a mere 8 hours before the start of polling on Monday. The Commission said that the postponement was to offset the vitiating effect of the money power created by the distribution of money and gift items to voters.

The decision comes close at heels of a similar decision made on Saturday to postpone the polling at the Aravakuruchi constituency in Karur district.

In an official statement, a senior official of the Election Commission said, The commission, acting on the basis of reports of cash seizures and evidence of large scale distribution of money to voters, has directed polling in Thanjavur assembly constituency to be put off. Further, the Commission has directed that the poll in the constituency shall now be held on May 23, 2016, instead of May 16, and the counting of votes shall take place at 8 am on May 25, 2016, instead of May 19 as scheduled earlier.
