TRAI may make it mandatory for telcos to open up OTT services

According to reports, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is all set to initiate a process that may see telcos go the way of OTT players such as WhatsApp and Skype of allowing users to make calls over the Internet. The report also says that TRAI to bring out another consultation paper that will determine whether telcos should provide Internet telephony services.

During an interfere, a senior TRAI official said, It is difficult for TSPs to provide VoIP services but then there are other services that provide those services. (I) believe that it is a ‘situation of regulatory imbalance’.

Two years ago, a huge debate over the long term issue pertaining to net neutrality rules and regulations ensued. At that time, Bharti Airtel decided to charge OTT services such as WhatsApp and Skype separately. But there was large public outcry that forced the telecom giants to withdraw their demands.
