Central government: iPad and smartphones for postmen

The central minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr. Ravishankar Prasad has informed that 650 post offices will have banking operations introduced before 30th September, the next year.

Approval was granted to start banking operations by the cabinet ministry headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed that the cabinet ministry has given approval for starting banking services in 650 Post Offices with an investment of Rs. 800 Crores. This will be implemented before 30th September, the next year.

The Minister further informed that there are 1.54 Lakh Post Offices in the country. Out of these, 134 Lakh Post Offices are located in rural areas.

The number of Post Offices linked through the network called Core Banking is more as compared to similar banks linked in the State Bank of India.

The Minister also informed that the plan to give iPads and smart phones to the postmen in urban areas is mooted and being explored.
