Safety Commissioner to inspect underground stretch between Koyambedu-Shenoy Nagar Stretch

Officials of CMRL have mentioned that the underground stretch between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar will be inspected by the Railway Safety Commissioner during the month of September.
 
The phase I of the project covers 45 km of the city that extends from Washermanpet to Chennai airport (23 km) and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount (22 km). There will be 19 stations in the elevated path and 13 railway stations in the underground path. Of this, only 10 km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur has been launched. Now trial run is being made in Little Mount- Airport- St Thomas Mount stretch. It is expected that this stretch will be operational by end of this month.
 
Tunneling work between Koyambedu and Egmore a distance of 8 kms has been completed a few months back. The entire work between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar underground stretch has been completed. Trial runs with the loco were done three months ago. Now a 4 coach metro rail trial is being done from 16th July.
 
At this juncture, it is understood that the Railway Safety Commissioner will be inspecting this underground stretch. Only after his approval, the date for commercial operations will be announced.
