Posted on: 25/Aug/2016 4:28:29 PM
The state government of Tamil Nadu has informed in the High Court that the elections for the local administrations have to be held in October and these will be conducted as per the current ward details due to unavoidable circumstances.

Legal petitions were filed on behalf of DMK and PMK in the Chennai High Court regarding the elections for local administration. The tenure of the members who were elected ends on 24th October 2016. So, legally, elections for the local administrations have to be held in October.

The Panchayat-wise population details were made available only in 2014.
It may not be possible to redraft the data in over 1 Lakh wards following all the rules and regulations in such a short time. The quota for the reserved classes will remain based on the census taken in 2011.

As the number of wards is too high, it would be impossible to redraft the data within October. So, the state government has decided to conduct the elections for the local administration based on the existing ward data. So, the quota for reservation communities in Panchayats will be as per the census records that were taken in 2011.

There is no need to impose a ban on the alterations carried out in the Panchayat Laws. So, the reply petition given by the state government explains that the arrangements for election organisation is in progress as above.
