90 per cent of the tunneling completed by CMRL

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed 90 per cent of the tunneling and the remaining would be over in six months. Eleven the giant tunnel boring machines (TBM) machines arrived in the city four years ago from across the world and started tunneling work. But only five remain now and the rest have been sent back since the tunneling is over.
 
Since its launch from Washermanpet, Herrenknecht tunnel boring machines, (S-711) High Road, railway lines at Fort MRTS station, bridges and the Buckingham Canal to reach Chennai Central as part of Corridor 1 of Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project.
 
Underground construction of Chennai Metro Rail Project as part of Corridor 2 has already been completed upto Egmore and the stretch is getting ready for commissioning and trials in this stretch are in progress.
 
Once the entire work is complete, trials would be conducted with a four-car train before official inspections by various bodies begin to obtain the necessary approvals to launch operations.
