Number of work days increased under MGNREGA

Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 50 more days are added. Because of this, the working days become 150.
 
In Tamil Nadu, this Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is implemented 12.524 rural village panchayats of 31 districts. In the current financial year 33.43 crore man days were created and Rs.4,655 crore was given as salaries to the workers. Considering the prevailing drought situation in Tamil Nadu, the number of man days has increased by three crore. From the 12 lakh workers who were employed per day, due to the prevailing drought situation it had increased to 18 lakh workers in the current financial year.
 
The Tamil Nadu government had announced that due to draught, the working days would be increased to 150 days. In continuation of this Chief Minister K Palaniswami had approached the central government. In view of this the central government has given its approval for increasing the number of days of employment given to rural household workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in Tamil Nadu from the existing 100 days to 150 days. The Tamil Nadu government has mentioned that 1.23 crore workers would be benefitted because of the central governments approval.
