The Chennai Metro Rail Limited has adapted a few features present in heritage buildings, as a move to perk up the commuters experience during their travel.
Terracotta cladding tiles are stuck to buildings that belong to Pachaiyappa’s College Station between Thirumangalam-Nehru Park stretches. This is likely to get opened within a month.
Structures next to St. George’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School which is a heritage structure has got tiles stuck to them. A CMRL official stated that the same will also be done on the Madras High Court and Chennai Central stations as well.
The structure of St. George’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School is rich in heritage and carries unique arcade in brick, said Sujatha Shankar, architect and INTACH Chennai Convenor. I have not got any idea about how the output is going to be, but the attempt will be either successful or terrible. The sensitivity of design and construction materials is the deciding factor here, she added.
A former member of the chief urban planner, CMDA said the station will be outstanding and stunning if it is well executed.
