According to sources from the urban development ministry, the Chennai Metro Rail underground corridor running between Nehru Park and Koyambedu is likely to kick-start functioning from 14th May. The inauguration event of the 7km stretch will be graced by Union urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy.

Later on the same day, the commercial operations will begin. Once this gets opened, the route will provide easy way to commute between Nehru Park and St. Thomas Mount.

This will not just provide better connectivity, but also all new experience of underground travelling. Residents from New Avadi, Shenoy Nagar, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar, and Kilpauk can be benefitted out of it, said an inhabitant of Amjikarai.

What is special about the underground train? Well, the underground line has platform screen doors that get automatically opened once the train arrives at the station. The stations are entirely air conditioned and have 8 giant fans for ventilation. There is crossover facility at Shenoy Nagar station which is a premier station.

The stretch between Nehru Parks and Central is likely to get opened in 2018 and it will have train frequency for every once in 15 minutes, as there is not enough train reversal facility at Nehru Park station. There are two tunnels between Shenoy Nagar and Koyambedu, and Shenoy Nagar and Nehru Park. The inauguration by Chief Managing Director Pankaj Kumar Bansal is still not affirmed.

The stations present between Nehru Park and Koyambedu include Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar East, Pachaiyappa’s College, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar Tower, Kilpauk Medical College and Nehru Park.
