The Chennai Metro Rail underground section between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park commenced last Sunday (14th May).
The system of smart cards usage has been implemented in this section. The passengers will have to buy the minimum of Rs, 100 worth smart card to travel. Each passenger in the train is given a separate card. This card can be used for 1 year.
A fee of Rs. 10 is charged for the cards. The fare of the travelled place will be deducted from the balance Rs. 90.
The fare from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park is fixed at Rs. 24. So, for this travel, Rs. 24 will be deducted. This card can be used anytime. The fare will be deducted for each travel. It can be recharged.
The recharging facility is available at the Metro Railway station customer service centre or can be done online.
During the inauguration time, tickets were issued in the form of tokens. Now, this is cancelled. Only smart cards can be used for travel in the underground Chennai Metro.
A 10 percent concession is on offer while travelling with the smart card. For the earlier token system, this concession was not available.
The smart card system is planned to be extended to the Chennai Metro Rail elevated corridor sections as well.
This smart card can be exchanged for other types of cards including the trip card. The trip card carries a 20 percent concession.
The Chennai Metro officials informed that in the short future, all sections of travels will require only the smart card for travel.
