Following the inauguration of underground stretch between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park, the CMRL has now started the works needed to link its services with the Central station. With this, the CMRL will link Egmore and Central stations. These will be the next two stations following Nehru Park Metro Rail station.

CMRL officials state that works to lay tracks from Egmore station for about 1.5 km stretch have started. This has to be completed to reach the Central station.

In another three months, these works will get over. The rest of the civil works and trial runs will start following this. These trials will take place for at least one month. Works to construction these stations are also on the go.

After completion of trails, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety shall carry out regular inspection and after this, the stretch shall get opened for the public.

By the end of this year, the connectivity till Central station shall become a reality.

It is anyway still uncertain whether the construction of largest underground station at Chennai Central shall get over by that time.

Presently, there is an underground stretch connecting Thirumangalam and Nehru Park. And an elevated stretch connects Koyambedu and Airport through link ramp. After opening the Central station, there will be a 20-km ride by the Metro Rail.
