Very soon, metro stations are to go green. At these stations, solar power is to be used for maintaining trains.

The Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has got into contract with a private company for installing solar panels. These are to have a capacity of 6MW power at the metro stations. Once these solar panels are installed, about Rs 1 crore can be saved in a year. The expense can furthermore be reduced with extra clean energy.

An energy solutions provider based in Mumbai has acquired the contract for installing these solar photovoltaic panels on the metro station rooftops. The power thus produced will get used for lighting, escalators, air-conditioning system, elevators, electrical items for public usage, etc.

Last year, the very first installation of solar panel of 1MW capacity was made at the administrative building in Koyambedu. It was then that the CMRL first started using such clean energy resource. This produces 5000 units of power per day out of the 1MW grid power. This gets used for administration and train maintenance works. It was believed that this installation at Koyambedu would save at least Rs 1.12 crore for CMRL.
