Police verification for passport likely to go void

The centre is planning to merge all procedures with the Central and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project. The idea was originally conceptualized by the UPA government during 2009. With this, the need to make physical police verification will likely diminish.

Once the CCTNS is implemented, manual police verification may get simplified and can be done just with a few clicks. Furthermore, it is a very old process that paves way for bribing by local police officers at the time of address and identity verification.

According to the Union Home Secretary, Rajiv Mehrishi, the national database containing thorough list crimes and criminals shall soon be linked with passport services of External Affairs Ministry. The past history and background verification of applicants shall be done by CCTNS with just a single click.

The CCTNS method is already in practice in a few states, said Mr Mehrishi. Applicant details can be uploaded on the handheld devices given to the police once they reach their home. In addition to reducing contact between the applicant and police officer, this move shall also bring down bribing and overall time to obtain passport.
