Mutton Curry Recipe

Do you want to taste the traditional flavors of Mutton Curry and enjoy a relaxing Sunday? Well, here is the recipe. It is very easy to prepare and tastes absolutely fantastic.

While new cooks may take about an hour to prepare the dish, experienced can make it within 45 minutes! Check out the recipe below:

Required ingredients
  • Mutton 0.5 kg
  • Coconut milk 1.5 cup
  • Sesame oil or nallennai 0.25 cup
  • Finely chopped onion 1
  • Tomatoes 2
  • Ginger garlic paste 2 tablespoons
  • Curry leaves- 2 to 3 springs
  • Coriander leaves as required to garnish
  • Salt as required
  • Spices needed
  • Bay leaf 1
  • Cinnamon 1 lengthy piece
  • Pepper 1 tsp
  • Fennel seeds 1 tsp
  • Cloves 4 pieces
  • Star Anise 1
  • Masala items required
  • Turmeric powder 0.5 tsp
  • Red chilli powder 2 tsp
  • Kashmiri chilli powder 2 tsp
  • Coriander powder 2 tsp
  • Fennel powder 2 tsp
  • Cumin Powder 0.5 tsp
  • Garam masala 1 tsp
Cooking procedure
  • Step 1 - Take the mutton pieces and wash them thoroughly using fresh water. To remove any impurities, you may sprinkle turmeric powder and wash it. Once cleaned, keep it aside.
  • Step 2 - Take a pressure cooker and add sesame oil. Once it gets heated add bay leaf and other spices as mentioned in the list of ingredients. This includes pepper, cinnamon, fennel, cloves and star anise. Once added, saut it for some time.
  • Step 3 - Add curry leaves and allow them to splutter.
  • Step 4 - Once the spices have got fried, add finely chopped onions and fry them until they turn golden brown. For better taste, you may choose to use small onions rather than regular ones.
  • Step 5 - Once the onions get cooked, add ginger garlic paste and cook until the raw smell goes off.
  • Step 6 - At this stage, add finely chopped tomatoes and fry them too.
  • Step 7 - Now it is the time for adding the masala including turmeric powder, red chilli powder, fennel powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and mix thoroughly. Keep cooking and stir often until the entire mixture turns homogenous and silky that the oil oozes out along the sides. This step is very important and it largely decides the overall taste of the curry.
  • Step 8 - Once cooked, add the freshly washed mutton pieces. Make sure to strain the excess water from the mutton, if any while adding to the dish. Mix thoroughly so that the grave gets coated on the mutton pieces. Add required amount of salt.
  • Step 9 - To this, add coconut milk and water and bring it to one full boil. Once it comes to a full boil, close the lid and pressure cook for about 6 to 7 whistles. Turn off the stove and wait until the cooker pressure subsides on its own.
  • Step 10 - Once the pressure gets released, open the lid and mix well. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
Now, mutton gravy is ready to be served. This can be a fantastic side dish to Idli, Dhosa, Idiyaappam, hot steamed rice!
