This is good news for the residents of Chennai. It is now brought out that after a long gap of eight years the 6 laning of the stretch of ECR or East Coast Road from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai is back on track. The DPR or detailed project report on this is currently going on.

Earlier it was said that two grade separators would be present at both the ends of 12 km stretch with a width of 30 meters. The officials have taken a re-look at the practicality of a grade separator in Thiruvanmiyur.

An official expressed his thoughts and said presence of a bus depot plus workshop. Marundeeswarar temple, many commercial outlets etc have made them to reconsider the grade separator plan. The traffic congestion at ECR would be eased by means of a grade separator at Akkarai.

The official later spoke about how it is important to have signal free, smooth traffic to and from Sholinganallur. It is known that Sholinganallur is highly congested due to many motorcyclists going to ECR from OMR and Tambaram.

A detailed project report is being prepared by a private consultancy and this report would be ready in the month of July.

As much as 8935 hectares of land would be acquired from 737 land owners so that widening on the both sides of four-lane stretch is possible. In places such as Thiruvanmiyur, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam etc the lands are present and would be used for widening.

Delay in this project was caused due to land acquisitions and this was confirmed by officials and the land acquisition would be around Rs 500 crores. An official spoke about how it would now cost Rs 150 crores for the construction.

One important piece of information is till Akkarai it would be six-laned stretch beyond that up to Puducherry it would be four-laned highway.
