Setting against Activa and Jupiter, Which is best?

Scooter? That’s Honda Activa, period! Such an awesome, sought-after scooter it is. It’s listed among the top selling 2-wheelers in the country, but is that really the perfect choice? Well, in the recent times, TVS Jupiter is also making the rounds, however its sale is not on par with that of Activa. Jupiter anyway does brilliant. With the latest Activa 5G update, there are many user-friendly revisions being done, and on the other hand Jupiter has got a retro look in its classic variant.

Here is a comparison of the two in terms of looks, instrumentation, seating and performance. Check out

In terms of looks

Indian scooters can basically be divided into 3 in terms of looks.

  • Family friendly designs
  • Sporty outlook like the Suzuki Burgman Street
  • Maxi-scooter

With the Activa and Jupiter, either of them fall under the family design such that it receives love from all corners and doesn’t get hated by anyone at all.

The Activa Look:

In India, when it comes to scooter, it is Activa. It is among the top selling two wheelers in our country. Hence, Honda doesn’t want to really play with its design so much. So, Activa has been getting only a little uplift in its look and abides by the original make. In the 5G model, there is an LED headlamp. It achieves a robotic look with its position lamp and has a chrome garnish in the front panels. Apart from this, the remaining make continues to be the same.

The Jupiter Look

It is a classic trim scoter. Its retro look is absolutely drool-worth and stands close to Vespa. However, the high priced Vespa makes it a secondary choice for many. Jupiter gets a windshield, rounded chrome mirrors, backrest with cushioning, dual tone seat, etc. While Jupiter is a stylish scooter by itself, when looked at the detailing in make, it is even more attractive. On the whole, the retro doesn’t seem to blend well with the angular lines present in Jupiter scooter.

Setting against each other, Jupiter wins in terms of looks. Though looking big, there is better proportion in its make and fetches a modernistic look.

Seating and instrumentation

Instrumentation is all new with the Activa 5G. It comes with a digital analogue combo and has ECO speed indicator as well. It also comes with a tripmeter, clock and digital fuel gauge. Its speedometer is of analogue type. It’s very easy to read from the entire set up and great in terms of looks as well. For improved convenience, there is also a four in one lock system which includes a switch to open the seat. There is an 18-litre storage in Activa whereas it is 17 liters with Jupiter.

To gel with the retro theme, Jupiter comes with a white background. Unlike the make of Activa 5G, with the Jupiter Classic, there is an all-analogue console. The four in one lock is also missing here and has separate ones to lock the seat, handle, etc. Jupiter bikers need not get up for filling at the petrol stations as the fuel fill is kept handy externally. Furthermore, there is also a USB charging under the seat.

While both of the scooters come with the height of 765mm, there is a difference with the floororboard – while it is lower and comfortable with Jupiter, there is larger floorboard with Activa, making it slightly wider. The cushioning given on Jupiter is firmer as compared to Activa. So, Jupiter is better in case of long drives.

Handling and performance

The engines remain precisely the same with either of the scooters. There is 8bhp and 9Nm torque produced out of Activa’s 109.19cc. In Jupiter, the engine is of 109.7 cc and produces 8bhp and 8.4 Nm torque. Comparing the weight, Activa weighs 109 kg and it is 108 kg with Jupiter. In terms of these aspects, the numbers are quite the same, but still the performance on road significantly varies.

Give the throttle and there is no comparison with Activa at all! It is heavier than Jupiter, but its peppiness can never be achieved. On Honda, there is improved refinement as well. Its fuel efficiency is 60 kmpl while it is 55kmpl with Jupiter. The Honda Eco Technology certainly does a better job than CTV-1 unit of Jupiter.

In terms of braking, Jupiter has its advantages. There is telescopic front suspension with Jupiter, and trailing link suspension in Activa. The front disc is of 220mm whereas the Activa has a drum setup along with the braking. The wheels of Jupiter are of 12 inches, but with Activa it’s 10 inches. So, ultimately Jupiter gives better road drive quality at high speeds.

So, the call as to which scooter to go with is subject to your individual preference upon the above comparison. Go ahead and choose what suits you! Happy riding!
