Preliminary works to lay ballastless tracks by metro in north Chennai

The latest news is CMRL or Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited has started the preliminary works in north Chennai to lay ballastless tracks that are needed for the operation of the metro trains. The construction of 9km metro rail corridor in North Chennai is going on at full pace is known. By the month of March in 2020, the 9km phase 1 extension line between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar would be ready. As per an official belonging to metro rail, tenders for both MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and for track work have been floated. He spoke about the track work that would be started before the end of this year 2018.

It is known that extension line in north Chennai has 2km underground section connected by 2 stations. There is also a 7km elevated stretch that is linked through 6 stations. The superb piece of information is once the line gets ready it would be beneficial for the people of north Chennai as they would be able to go to various localities in Chennai that are connected by metro rail network.

In the year 2016 work for extension line in north Chennai started. The construction of 2 tunnels along the 2km stretch from Washermenpet to Korukkupet was completed towards the end of 2017. It must be noted that the work for construction of elevated corridor started after that and is still going on. Elevated maintenance depot is also being constructed at Wimco Nagar by CMRL.

One important point is recently a tender was floated to find a company that can supply, install and commission electrical as well as mechanical systems at the depot. It is now revealed that metro rail is expecting these systems to be in place within a time of 18 months. It is known that CMRL is a joint venture between the government of TN and the government of India and in the year 2015 the CMRL started its services.
