On Friday, 24th August 2018, CMRL or Chennai Metropolitan Rail Limited grabbed the attention of many. CMRL began its trial run in the last leg of 45km phase-1. A diesel locomotive was operated across 9.5km stretch between AG-DMS and Washermenpet and this took place via the Chennai Central metro and Anna Salai line.
From the month of September, trial runs with metro trains would start as the stretch would get ready by the month of December. Then the official inspections would begin to get the approval for commercial operation of the metro trains. A locomotive ran on ballastless tracks across 8 underground stations yesterday. It is important to note that these underground metro stations were AG-DMS, Thousand Lights, LIC, Government Estate, Chennai Central, High Court, Mannadi and Washermenpet. It is clear that the commercial operation of this stretch would complete the metro rail network along the 45km phase-1.
An official belonging to metro rail spoke about how by the end of this 2018 lower track level of Chennai metro would be ready. By the month of December 2018, other stations would also be ready.
For the sake of easy access, one of the entry points of AG-DMS and Government Estate stations are being integrated with the present pedestrian subway. The official later highlighted that systems like overhead electrification, signalling plus others like tunnel ventilation, HVAC, platform screen doors are getting installed. He explained the importance of the line getting ready with all the systems and spoke about the trial that would start later on. RDSO and CMRS inspections for getting approval to start commercial operations would begin later.
A contractor from Russia abandoned the work on the Anna Salai citing financial crisis is known. It must be noted that the stretch covers a part of this Anna Salai where the work was stalled for more than a year.
